Patience….
It is a good quality to have when you are training a dog. Some people (like my wife) have unlimited amounts of it.
Over the years I have worked hard to develop more of it.
But I was tested this week and had to work hard to not lose it. Here’s what happened:
Local radio station contacted me to discuss advertising on their “Fun” airways.
The appointment was set for 9AM Thursday morning. 9AM came and went. 9:05AM, 9:10AM, 9:15AM and the salesperson walks in.
NOT a good way to start a business relationship with me. My schedule is tight and arriving 15 minutes late for a business meeting makes my blood boil.
This person says, “Sorry I’m late I was in the parking lot answering an email.”
Just went from bad to worse.
I have been in business since 1995 and if there is one thing I have learned it is if someone does not respect your time, they will respect little else.
So the meeting was doomed from the beginning because of…
…trust.
How can I do business with someone I don’t trust?
Which bring us to the most important part of having a dog. The relationship you develop with your dog has to be built on trust.
This is done by structuring the relationship with your dog.
Structuring the relationship is done through controlling your dog’s basic needs.
Your dog has to eat, rest, play, and have social contact with you and other dogs.
You should use and control these basic needs to provide leadership and boundaries.
You develop trust by being consistent with your interactions and training. It is unfair to your dog if you allow him to jump on you one moment and then punish him later when you have your good clothes on.
Taking your dog for walks and play sessions are crucial for developing trust.
You get the trust right and everything else falls into place. Get this wrong and there will be issues.
Which is why I won’t be doing radio commercials any time soon.
Trust is fragile. Hard to develop and easy to destroy.
