Breeder or Rescue….
Numerous times I have clients come to me in search of a new puppy/dog to add to their household. Many times they are so unsure of whether they should adopt/rescue or buy from a breeder, and they are seeking my advice. They hear all too often the mantra “Adopt Don’t Shop”, and they get worried that if they were to purchase a puppy that they would be doing a terrible thing.
My advice to them goes far beyond the surface of adopting or purchasing. It has to do with lifestyle, past experiences, goals and more. There are pros to both adoption and purchasing a puppy. Today, I want to discuss the pros of purchasing a puppy from a really reputable breeder, and what that means for you and what that means for the puppy you would be buying.
I will use my friend, and breeder Tracie Naisbitt Kay, as a great example of what I am talking about. She breeds Great Weimer (Great Dane and Weimaraner mix) puppies, and her kennel name is Full House Great Weimars. She currently has two sweet munchkins available for purchase, as you can read in her post I am sharing here.
When you purchase from an awesome reputable breeder, you are getting a puppy that comes from known parents with tons of genetic testing to ensure it is physically healthy. You are getting a puppy that has had an incredible amount of emphasis put into its whelping and raising, ensuring it will be as healthy as possible. You are getting a puppy that has had a fantastic socialization and training regimen from the time it was 3 days old, that you will have little worry they will have fearful tendencies. You will get a puppy that comes crate trained, almost completely potty trained, already started on its obedience commands, and has visited so many places that not much phases it! The puppy will have met over 100 men, woman and children, as well as numerous safe dogs. This is what you get and more when you purchase a puppy from a reputable breeder.
It is hard to imagine bringing home a puppy that will be so well adjusted and comfortable. But, it is one of the huge benefits to purchasing a puppy from a reputable breeder.
So, if you are in the market for a new puppy, consider ALL the options. Neither adoption or purchasing a puppy is wrong, as long as you’ve done your research, consulted a professional if needed, and you know what to expect.
Just keep in mind, there are still two of these AMAZING puppies looking for their homes. And, imagine how easy and sweet life could be by purchasing a puppy that comes with so much!
