4 Magic Words Every Dog Owner Should Know
This is from my Dog Training Client, Eric who owns http://ericletendre.com
I appreciate your patience because I know you patiently wait each week to get one of my hard hitting, info packed, highly entertaining emails loaded with useful dog training tips to help you and your dog.
But I must confess…
I’ve been off the charts busy.
Ever since I opened our new Dog Training location in Westport, MA the amount of dogs coming in stuns me.
This week I have 42 private appointments and 10 group classes to teach.
Believe me, I am not complaining. I love it!
Something had to give… and writing was put on the back burner.
But I’m back on it. I am going to make sure one of these puppies lands in your inbox each week.
How did we get so busy so fast? How did we open a location and go from zero to packed inside of three months?
Some think it is my wit and humor.
Others think it’s my experience and time-tested skilz.
Or because we’ve been featured in The Standard Times, Shorelines, and a few other places.
But there is one MAIN reason why we have become as busy as we are.
You see, dog training can be a very confusing topic. Take a few minutes and search Google for answers to your dog training questions. You’ll walk away more confused than when you began the search.
I teach one simple word which solves loads and loads of behavior problems.
Teaching this one word has caused problems for me. I am shunned, ridiculed, even attacked for teaching this one word.
You think I am kidding. I am banned from most shelters and rescues in the area (except Fairhaven Animal Shelter – great place with some great, dedicated people).
Last time I spoke at Potter League for Animals I broke the record for attendees. I worked there as the head trainer for three years, helped raise thousands of dollars for them. After my last talk there I was asked to not come back. Did I make an off color joke? Offend someone?
Nope.
I was banned because I teach 4 magic words to dogs, one of them…unacceptable!
Give me a second and I am going to share with you the 4 magic words.
Onward.
Decades of experience, former Fall River animal control officer, seven years experience working as a K9 supervisor in Hartford CT, author of four dog training books (available on Amazon), over 13 million YouTube video views, thousands of happy clients all over the Southcoast and Rhode Island, no one comes close to my experience and I am persona non grata!
All because I don’t back down from teaching one simple word and never will. I am sure if I refused to mention or teach this word Potters would welcome me back.
Have you figured out which word it is yet?
The word is….
…..NO!
There is one veterinarian in the area who hands out a puppy package to their new clients and in the package it clearly states you never, under any circumstances, say NO to your puppy for any reason.
This is DEADLY advice!
Teaching your dog NO is one of the most important words your dog can ever learn. And there is NOTHING wrong with teaching your dog NO.
NO IS A LIFE SAVING WORD!!!
It amazes me dog training has come to this. We have shelters, rescues, veterinarians, vet behaviorists, DOG TRAINERS, telling unsuspecting dog owners they CAN’T say or teach NO to their dogs.
I’ll be the lone wolf if I must, but I will NEVER stop helping you or any other dog owner understand how behavior works. And to STOP a behavior you have to teach and use the word NO!
There is more to our training than just teaching NO. In fact, I teach four magic words to every dog I help train.
Talk to anyone who has been through my training program and they will tell you the 4 magic words and what they do. Here they are:
YES
GOOD
WRONG
NO
When your dog learns these 4 words you’ll be able to communicate what behavior you want them to do and for how long: GOOD! GOOD is to communicate duration or behavior.
Your dog will learn when they are finished with the command: YES! YES is to communicate when the dog has completed the behavior.
When your dog makes a mistake: WRONG! WRONG is used to let the dog know when they have made a mistake.
And when you want your dog to STOP doing a behavior like jumping, chewing, stealing food off your counters, biting, and much more: NO!
NO is taught to communicate what you need your dog to STOP doing.
Think of it this way. You have a big, giant box of chocolates from Valentines Day on your counter. Your dog jumps up to grab the chocolates and you know will devour them in seconds.
What would you say in this situation. You want your dog to STOP going for chocolates because it is a dangerous situation.
I would wager you would say NO in this situation. All four magic words are important but when it comes to keeping your dog SAFE, NO is the most important and why shelters, rescues, dog trainers, and veterinary behaviorists are against it is crazy!
No worries, I am here for you. I’ll be the sane voice of reason and always available to help
And before I sign off let me share this important training nugget: Behavior does NOT change without consequences. There are two types of consequences and they must both be used in order for your dog to learn.
