Teaching Your Dog Recall (to come when called).
If your dog is just learning recall, these are the things that you want to AVOID!
- Yelling at your dog when they eventually get to you. .
- Giving your dog low valued treats or praise. You need to be fun and important.
- Being boring when you call your dog.
- Repeating the “come” command over and over again, they will learn they can ignore you.
- Never be negative once your dog gets to you. ALWAYS reward your dog for coming to you.
- Saying “come” when you know your dog isn’t going to come, use a long leash to encourage your dog to come to you.
- Don’t accidentally reward your dog for not coming. Be clear in what is good behavior and what isn’t.
- Taking your dog off the leash when you have a poor recall.
- Don’t take the chance of your dog taking off, use a long leash to give them more freedom and test their recall.
- Remember your dog can sense/read your feelings and emotions, that is where the phrase “it goes down the leash” comes from, if you aren’t confident and sure of what you are doing, your dog might sense that and not be as comfortable to follow your lead.
